2025

Parajubaea torallyi var torallyi

Trachycarpus princeps

Brahea decumbens and Brahea moorei
In the middle of winter

Autumn 2025

Lanonia dasyantha

Narrow spaces outside the home

Cold-hardy and beautiful

Oraniopsis appendiculata and Rhopalostylis sapida

The palm trees here grow slowly, so they won't be taller than the roof for a while.

Frost pillars appear, but it is a relatively warm place.
The lowest temperature is about minus 3 degrees.

By using the roof to protect from the snow, we managed to get through the winter unscathed.

This is also an Oraniopsis in the greenhouse

I wanted to keep my cold-sensitive Raphia australis warm using halogen lights to help it survive the winter.

As a result, two seedlings survived the winter.

The plant that grew best from spring to autumn was the Chamaedorea tepejilote.

Ravenea glauca andringitra has been affected by high temperatures.

This seedling germinated in 2017

This seedling germinated in 2021

Chrysalidocarpus baronii

The branched growing point was broken off by a cat attack. The cat had no ill will

The crown shaft had softened after wintering.
At that moment, the cat jumped off the greenhouse landing and landed.

Chrysalidocarpus baronii black petiole
It's interesting how different the same species can look.

The palm that grew the most leaves in the greenhouse was Syagrus hoehnei

The first flower buds appeared.
At first it seems difficult to bear fruit.

Small palm trees.
I surrounded it with concrete blocks and heated it with halogen lights to survive the winter.

A pipe runs underground that drains water from the tropical fish tank's filter.

Chamaedorea tenella

Chamaedorea metallica
Metallica is about twice the size of Tenella.

Chamaedorea tuerckheimii
Potato Chip Palm

After changing the soil from sandy to humus, the Potato Chip Palm started to thrive.
Flowers have also bloomed.

 Linospadix monostachyos

Two of the three have been nibbled by pillbugs and are growing slowly.

The first leaf of Linospadix monostachyos was about the size of the first joint of my finger.

West open air

This area is the coldest in my garden.

The lowest temperature on February 20th was minus 5 degrees.

Acoelorrhaphe wrightii azul could not survive the winter.

I also tried Acoelorrhaphe wrightii in Hiroshima and Maizuru, but it seems to have difficulty surviving the winter.

If they can find a microclimate they will survive the winter just fine.

This is a Acoelorrhaphe wrightii planted near a domestic drain.
It's the second warmest place in my house.

Brahea sp. 'super silver'

The leaves were dry this winter and may have damaged the roots, but they are fine now.
A powder like Brahea Armata has started to appear on the leaves.

Nannorrhops ritchiana kashmir

Regular Nannorrhops ritchiana and Arabica Silver cannot survive the winter.
The only species of this species that survives the winter is kashmir.

Chamaedorea radicalis arborescent

It grows to roof height and is sandwiched between the gutters.
It grows so fast that next year the crown shaft may exceed the height of the roof.

The plant below is a dwarf Radicalis that was born by chance.
I'm looking forward to seeing it grow as well.

Parajubaea torallyi var torallyi

I tried peeling off the fibers from the trunk.
The leaf stalks are bright green and refreshing.

The growing point appears to be gradually rising.

The base of the palm provides an environment that is conducive to seedling growth.

Parajubaea sunkha

I feel like the leaves won't grow any bigger.
The difference with the torallyi is starting to become apparent.

Chamaedorea microspadix

It will grow in the sun, but looks better in the shade.

Butia lepidotispatha

Dwarf Butia. Planted under a roof to protect from frost.
Syagrus harleyi and Nannohopus arabica Silver planted in the same place did not survive the winter.

Trachycarpus princeps

I planted it to harvest the seeds.

Trachycarpus latisectus

It's been three years since they sprouted.
If they don't get replanted, they'll merge together.

Pelagodoxa henryana

This palm tree was a gift from a friend in Okinawa.
Marquesas palm initially have beautiful scales covering them.

The seeds germinated in early summer and grew rapidly in the hot 40 degree summer.

Pigafetta filaris
It is a very interesting plant in the Calamoideae subfamily with a green trunk.

It likes direct sunlight right after germination. Usually, the leaves get burned, but this is unusual.

Chambeyronia houailouensis

Contrary to the above species, this seedling is very susceptible to leaf burn.

The seedlings were gradually acclimatized and were able to tolerate 50% shading.

Chamaedorea adscendens

These seeds were provided by Happy Palms through RPS.
When I was shown a photo of the mature tree, it was very compact and just the kind of palm I like.

Preparing for the winter of 2025-2026

This is a reptile tank, and it originally had a mesh lid,
but it was replaced with a glass lid, so it seems that condensation is dripping down the door.

The condensation problem was solved by attaching an LED transformer to the glass.
It also serves as a transformer cooler, so it kills two birds with one stone.

The greater the difference between the outside temperature and the heated environment temperature,
you need to be aware that "moisture will move to areas with lower temperatures."
The water source should be placed in the hottest area.

A small greenhouse within a greenhouse

To keep the palm seedlings warm, we use long, thin polystyrene foam boxes called "toro boxes."
Make a hole in the lid where the pot will rest. The water in the pool is kept at 26°C by an automatic heater.

It will grow occasionally with heat and abundant humidity.
But don't expose it to sunlight.Small greenhouses can get too hot.

This small greenhouse also has a heated pool like the one above.

Additionally, we have installed a heat lamp with a smart plug.
This is a great product that allows you to remotely control the switch using your smartphone.
In spring, the sun will come out and the plastic will need to be removed.

See you next year
